The Masiphumelele Township is situated south of Cape Town. There is a primary school that offers 1st to 7th grade education. However, there was a considerable lack of appropriate pre-school facilities for 4 to 6 year old children. The construction of a kindergarten that could accommodate 120 children between 2 and 6 years old was planned. After its completion the kindergarten was taken over by the Department of Social Development. The teachers are officially recognised and are being paid by the Government after 18 months on the job training. In the meantime, parents have contributed to the education of their children to enable the school to be operational. After a fi rst year with 95 children enrolled, the kindergarten is growing continuously. In December 2017, 102 children attended the kindergarten run by a headmistress where four recognized teachers work.
These children from Masiphumelele Township can now attend pre-school and enjoy education by professional teachers.
