Duration 1 year (2016)
Organisation Caritas Schweiz, Lucerne

The city of Aleppo witnessed fierce battles in the second half of 2016 where hundreds of mortar shells and rockets landing in the city caused numerous injuries and deaths. Many people lost their homes and income. Displaced families, either sheltering in public buildings or living on their own, faced daily survival issues such as access to food, health care and non-food items. The local partner of Caritas Schweiz, the Jesuit Refugee Services, continued serving hot meals to vulnerable households. The project reached out to a monthly average of 6 786 people. A total of 1 346 495 meals were served during the life of the project. After the security situation worsened, the project staff took precautions to avoid danger for the beneficiaries and the volunteer staff, and stopped working briefly in July and December 2016.

Jesuit Refugee Services organises volunteers who prepare and serve cooked meals to vulnerable households in Aleppo where access to food is difficult.
