The earthquake in April 2015 killed 9 000 people and destroyed large parts of infrastructure such as housing, schools, hospitals and roads. In consultation with the Government, IMPACT Nepal’s emergency reconstruction programme rebuilt three primary and four junior secondary schools and a health post in Bhotechaur, in the Sindhupalchock Province. IMPACT Nepal sensitised the local communities, ministries and local government and agencies to reconstruct buildings using earthquake resistant methods. By July 2017 the last school was rebuilt and refurbished, and now 1 251 students whereof 670 female are enrolled and study in well designed and safe environments. The health post which was partially demolished is again operational and provides the local area’s only health care service for 6 000 people. It receives between 20 anf 25 patients each day.
After the devastating earthquake, reconstruction of village schools in remote areas is essential, offering children education and chances for a brighter future.
