In order to gain access to health services and water points, the rural population must travel long distances. Drinking water is often contaminated and inadequate sanitation practices near water points contribute to the burden of disease. Lack of contraception leads to many early pregnancies and puts girls and women in precarious situations. In consultation with local health actors, BRAC has been working on access to health care. Health workers and volunteers from the communities were trained to provide home services to households and sensitise them on critical health issues. The importance of childbirth in a health facility or the presence of skilled personnel at childbirth was highlighted and around 4200 women were professionally cared for annually. Strong progress has also been made in promoting modern contraceptive methods.

A well trained community health worker visits women at their home and informs them about different health issues. Emphasis is given on maternal and neo-natal health care.
