Fewer young Roma people complete compulsory schooling compared to the overall population. HEKS has continued to develop its supplementary educational programmes to ensure that children of Roma or other disadvantaged groups are better integrated into the education system. In afternoon schools, disadvantaged children received support with their homework and were specifically stimulated in their cognitive and socialskills. The cooperation between schools and parents and the educational support had a positive effect on the children’s performance: Cognitive skills in reading, writing and arithmetic improved, fewer children had problems moving on to the next grade, problems with absences decreased and teachers were able to observe progress in the children’s social skills.

Faur lives with his family in modest circumstances and finds it difficult to concentrate on his homework at home. During after-school classes, Faur can do his homework and catch up on schoolwork.
