The refugee camp in the Cox’s Bazaar region, where the Rohingya who fled the violence in Myanmar now live, lacked sanitary facilities. HELVETAS Swiss Intercooperation constructed 80 latrines units with 4 latrines and handwashing facilities in each unit. To improve the safety at night for women, 40 of these latrine units are equipped with solar-powered lights. The waste from the latrines is collected in small biogas plants, which supply the gas for cooking for 12 communal kitchens. Each of these kitchens is used daily by 10 to 12 families. With the establishment of a cleaning and maintenance committee, the good operation of the sanitation facilities by the camp inhabitants is ensured. Although the biogas plant was initially viewed critically, the users and authorities are convinced after the construction.
Families cook on communal cooking stoves that are connected to biogas plants. Biogas production reduces the amount of sludge produced and reduces the consumption of scarce firewood.
