In the Kamuli district sugar cane is grown commerciallyin large quantities. To generate income, many small farmers leased their land to the companies. However, this reduced their own area under cultivation for fruit and vegetables. Consequently, the families became impoverished and suffered from hunger. Send a Cow worked with 400 farming families especially women to help them to use their few remaining resources to grow vegetables and purchase seeds and livestock.Agricultural training and the establishment of village savings and loan groups led to greater self-confidence, more ecological farming and improved access to the market. As a result, 320 households benefitted from improved nutrition and higher income, thus reducing their dependence on sugar cane as their sole source of income.

Josephine has gained the knowledge and skills to grow a variety of vegetables in her garden. She can now feed her family three nutritious meals a day and looks to the future with hope.
