In order to increase income generating opportunities for rural households in 18 villages in the two regions, HEKS together with two local partner organisations improved the value chain of the horticultural production. Horticulture is one of the main agricultural sources of income in that region. In total 2 800 fruit growers participated in the programme. The number of planted young trees now covers an area of 400 ha. Half of the participants, namely 1 400 farmers significantly improved their income. The production and sale of fresh fruits increased from 417 tonnes in 2015 to 561 tonnes sold in 2017. Additionally, 250 farmers in Vayots Dzor region increased their local sale from 3 100 kg dried fruit to 19 670 kg and 125 farmers found 12 new market links to sell their fresh fruits.

 

Gagik used to be a seasonal worker in Russia and had difficulties to take care of his family. Today he has a magnificent orchard which guarantees him a regular income.
