Even after the armed conflicts in East Congo, women continue to be victims of violence. In the remote communities in South Kivu, medica mondiale therefore established a network of six women’s organisations that care for women of all ages who were injured during and after the wars. All organisations are familiar with the local cultures as well as with the languages of the victims of violence. This is very important for affected women to have access to psychosocial or legal advice. Annually about 800 women and girls victims of sexual violence, girls who were forced into marriage and child mothers received trauma-sensitive assistance. The women were also socio-economically strengthened. For example, they received microcredits so that they could develop income-generating activities and lead a self-determined life.
Economic independence strengthens women at risk. By receiving a microcredit loan, these women started to raise goats and now earn their own income.
