Poverty is the main factor for children, especially young girls, dropping out of school. Street Child, through its national network of social workers and in cooperation with local authorities and schools, identified and enrolled 1900 early school leavers each year and those at-risk of dropping out in 17 urban and 178 rural locations. StreetChild provided intensive social support, in addition to financial and material assistance, to overcome complex barriers to school completion. The positive relationships built between social workers and families were crucial to success. In addition, 4000 families received funding, training and mentoring to start a viable business, thus creating a vital source of income for the families to help finance the education of their children and enabled more children to stay in school.
Mariama was supported in setting up a small fish selling business, which now enables her to send all the six children to school.
