Sector Emergency Relief
Country Honduras

Beneficiaries 6 600 individuals (4 000 female)
Duration 1 year (2020)
Organisation HEKS, Zurich

In Honduras, the two hurricanes affected more than 4 million people, destroyed or damaged 92 000 houses and 2 600 000 hectares of crop. To cover immediate needs, mainly to buy food and essential household items, 1 000 families received cash through checks.
414 families used part of the cash to repair their houses, or to rebuild their house from the scratch. 1 002 families rehabilitated their agricultural production by planting crops or buying fertilizer, as well as tools for their work and animals. Moreover, with the support of the project, 13 community water supply systems were repaired. The recipients of the cash through checks could decide themselves, how to use the cash, and set the priorities according to their needs. As a result, the beneficiaries were highly motivated and involved in assuming a leading role in improving their own living conditions.
