Support Youth to Follow an Apprenticeship Programme

Sector Education
Country Ghana
Location Kumasi and Offinso Districts
Beneficiaries 200 adolescents (169 women)
Duration 4 years (2017 – 2021)
Organisation Opportunity International, Zurich

In 2017, 250 adolescents from Kumasi and Offinso started an intense 3-year apprenticeship. Under the guidance of their masters, they learned trades such as dressmaking, hairdressing, catering, electricity, welding, plumbing and aluminium processing. To make them fit for the labour market, their education was complemented by life skills training. The trade masters were also trained to ensure a quality training and a best possible mentoring of the adolescents. In 2020, 200 participants could celebrate their graduation after passing the state-recognised final examination, and obtain their work licence in attendance of their masters, families and local dignitaries. A moment that filled them with pride! A survey conducted in 2021 showed that 172 graduates were working with their trade masters, 20 had found another employment and 8 were self-employed.
