In a society where the population is aging rapidly, chronically ill and disabled elderly with little financial means and no family to take care of them are in need of social and health support. The Swiss Red Cross established a home-based care system that ensures
daily social and health services to up to 700 elderly in 5 municipalities. Home-based care is appreciated by the clients and the municipalities that finance a substantial part of the costs. Clients who can afford, pay a contribution while those with little means are treated
for free. The project also focuses on keeping healthy elderly active by organising them in active aging groups. There, seniors are supported to improve their life quality by participating in their local communities. With the high number of 1 350 active elderly participating in the activities, active aging has shown to respond to a need.
Besides providing home-based care for elderly people with health problems, the Red Cross Society Tuzla also raises awareness about good health to the elderly. © Swiss Red Cross
