In March 2020, Bulgaria declared a strict lockdown in response to the Covid-19 pandemic. Caritas Sofia had to close its centres for children and families at risk. Yet it continued to support the children to ensure they could continue learning. In Kuklen, where most of the
families have smartphones or computers, Caritas Sofia formed age groups and assisted them in learning. In Malko Tarnovo and Banya, the staff prepared a personalised weekly plan for each child to learn at home, and to avoid gaps in their education. As the families were facing major financial difficulties most of the parents had not worked for at least two months Caritas Sofia provided them with food. On a monthly basis, 136 families and 202 individuals received a food parcel. Also on a monthly basis, an average of 152 individuals received a hot meal in Sofia, which included lunch and dinner.
