The intervention has been implemented in five Districts in the Western Highlands. Reaching Ministry of Health staff and traditional birth attendants in 21 rural health posts with training and essential equipment, the project focused on capacity building at the community level and improving emergency referral systems for women with high-risk pregnancies. Traditional birth attendants were trained to recognise danger signs and to work closely with pregnant women to put emergency plans into place. Piloting the postpartum haemorrhage balloon technology enabled them to control haemorrhages while accompanying women to health facilities in an emergency. Training for health staff included culturally appropriate healthcare, building trust and following official protocols to encourage greater uptake of health services by indigenous communities
