Children living in Roma settlements and children from other disadvantaged families face challenges and barriers accessing education due to socio-economic inequalities, existing disparities and social norms. Quality early childhood education is particularly beneficial for children with difficult backgrounds, as it provides stimulation which often is non-existent in the family environment. The project introduced a holistic approach to support girls and boys in their early development and successful transition into primary school. With meals, appropriate didactic materials, teacher training, health sessions, a parenting program for parents, an enabling environment for children to thrive was created. Municipal authorities introduced inclusive and quality early childhood development services to disadvantaged Roma and non-Roma children in their strategic plans.
In this class children learn about nature in a participatory and learner-centred way, while being sensitised to environmental issues. © Save the Children
