The armed conflict between the Tigray Regional Forces and the Ethiopian Government, which started in November 2020, caused the displacement of more than one million people. A large number of displaced persons that fled to Wag Hemra Zone suffered from lack of shelter, food, cooking facilities, fuel and equipment. Some refugees lived with their relatives or rented houses in the community. Due to high rents or no access to shelter, others were putting up makeshift sheds, risking to run into trouble with local authorities. Through distribution of cash and non-food items, and the provision of sanitation and hygiene services to both the refugees as well as to the host communities, this project filled a critical gap in basic services, enabling the refugees to afford rent, basic utilities to prepare food, and to get access to decent sanitation facilities.
