In the Wag-Hemra Zone in Northern Ethiopia, farmer households suffer from the results of climate change such as drought and uncertain rainy seasons. This leads to insufficient food for a high number of farmers and their families. Due to the introduction of climate smart agricultural techniques, up to 5 600 households were able to produce enough food to feed the family members throughout the year. Roof water harvesting systems were built for 188 houses to capture the little rainwater available. In the fields, the community was supported with the construction of dams that serve to retain rainwater in the soil by obstructing the off-flow. In the area, youth unemployment is considerable. 106 unemployed young people started small enterprises or income generating activities related to agriculture, thanks to business training and access to micro-credits.
