Eleven years after the start of the Syrian conflict, Lebanon continues to face a severe humanitarian crisis. 840 000 out of 1.5 million Syrian refugees keep on living in the flood-prone governorates of Baalbek El-Hermel and Bekaa, mostly in overcrowded and precarious shelters, such as informal settlements or rented apartments with leaking roofs and walls. Due to increased rental costs and the drastic rise of living costs, many families were threatened with eviction because they could no longer pay the rent. Medair, together with the UN Refugee Agency UNHCR, supported 211 000 people to improve their housing situation, and to live in decent conditions, with cash assistance and refurbishment measures. In 75 informal settlements drainage ditches and drainage systems were dug to reduce the risk of flooding.
