The Association pour la Promotion de la Femme Sénégalaise (APROFES), the local partner of IAMANEH, has been offering support and guidance to women victims of violence, and advocating for the reduction of violence against girls and women since 1993. As a result of this project, violence has declined in families and schools, as people increasingly find non-violent solutions to settle their conflicts. Village committees established by APROFES contributed to this result by adopting the role of mediators. The project witnessed more and more women willing to break the silence and ask for help. APROFES provided all victims that approached them with psychosocial counselling or accompanied them to health facilities, to the police or to court. With the new approach of involving more men, changes in the attitude of men and decision-makers are also being observed.
To address root causes of violence against women, men and village chiefs are encouraged to become role models and advocate for women’s rights. © IAMANEH
