The Ugandan NGO Link to Progress planned to provide access to safe water in 65 villages with low water coverage. Before the work started, village meetings were organised where the community expressed their needs and agreed on a financial contribution and water fees. The communities agreed to construct latrines themselves in order to improve the hygienic situation in the villages. 20 new boreholes were drilled and 45 water points rehabilitated, providing 19 500 individuals with access to safe water. Link to Progress also trained eight pump mechanics who provide maintenance and repair services financed from the fees paid by the water users to the water committees. At the end of the project 49 villages had 100 % latrine coverage. The remaining villages had latrine coverage of 85 % but are still actively building latrines.
