The aim of the project, which ran for several years, was to motivate young people to become actively involved in horticulture value chains. Through new income opportunities, unemployment and migration in this rural area were to be reduced. The final phase focused on marketoriented production of vegetables. A distinction was made between production groups at different stages of development. Youth groups in the early stages of training primarily supplied local vegetable markets, while already better-established groups produced for the export supply chain. In this way, young people learned not only to produce for profit for the local market or for export, but also to build a network of clients. The horticulture products, the sales volumes and the generated income were
increased impressively over this time.
Farmers learn how to improve quality and increase agricultural production. They are supported in choosing those vegetables – here French beans – that are in demand on the market. © FARM Africa | Esther Ruth Mbabazi
