Wag Hemra is an area suffering from chronic food insecurity and high rates of malnutrition. Climatic conditions make steady agricultural production, the main activity of the population, a challenge. The project introduced adapted agricultural methods that help to conserve water and increase agricultural production. Besides constructing water tanks for rainwater harvesting from roofs, the project supported the construction of bench terraces that reduced soil erosion by preventing water from draining off quickly. At household level, the project promoted permaculture gardening and the establishment of ring-basin infiltration pits to improve production in homestead orchards. These techniques were widely adopted, and they significantly contributed to strengthening the food security of families in Wag Hemra.
Ring ditches prevent water to run off after rainfall. The water is caught in the ditch and infiltrates slowly into the adjacent soil, thus allowing the family to grow food also during dryer periods. © HELVETAS Swiss Intercooperation | Patrick Rohr
