The Victims and Land Restitution Act of 2011 would guarantee public assistance for all victims of anti-personnel mines and explosive remnants of war. Yet many survivors are not recognised as subjects of this law. Moreover, assistance would be limited to emergency care. With this project, mine victims received access to comprehensive rehabilitation services. In six rural and seriously mine-polluted communities, the families of victims were equipped with psychosocial skills that allowed them to take good care of the injured. They were moreover involved in productive initiatives that strengthened their livelihoods. To prevent future mine accidents, emphasis was placed on educating a population of about 40 000 people. Handicap International provided guidance to the municipalities for integrating mine risk education into their contingency plans.
