This three-year project addressed the severe deficiencies in terms of water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) in the North Caribbean Coast Autonomous Region. Through a comprehensive approach, WASH shortages were tackled in households, schools and community health posts in some of the poorest and most marginalised rural communities. A total of 14 gravity-fed water supply systems were constructed together with 160 rainwater catchment systems to provide access to clean water in 21 communities. As a further component, innovative water and sanitation systems were installed at the regional office of the Ministry of Education as part of a vocational training programme for local water and sanitation providers. Youth entrepreneurs were empowered to apply these technologies at customer sites.
