The spread of coronavirus demanded a quick response to support measures mitigating the impact of the pandemic. The lockdown in Guatemala since 23 March 2020 hindered many families’ access to food, the support granted allowed Aqua Alimenta and its local partner ASECSA to provide food parcels to more than 400 quarantined families. Locally adapted seeds and organic fertiliser were also distributed, enabling the families to sow fast-growing vegetables and create their own vegetable gardens. To prevent the further spread of the virus, ASECSA produced brochures and radio programmes in 5 Mayan languages on topics related to Covid-19, i.e. prevention and treatment, stigmatisation and care of people with symptoms, domestic violence and food sovereignty. The emergency measures have been integrated across different projects of Aqua Alimenta.
