In 2016, Hurricane Matthew destroyed the already feeble livelihoods of the rural population in Camp Perrin. The project supported the farmers rebuilding their livelihoods and helped them to prepare for future natural disasters. The two community centres that were constructed to serve as shelter in case of a future hurricane are managed by recently established cooperatives. The centres also serve as training centres and for the distribution and storage of agricultural inputs. To ensure food security throughout the year, households were enabled to practice vegetable gardening; more than 2 000 fruit tree seedlings were produced in a nursery managed by the community, distributed and planted. The cooperatives set up and managed communal livestock schemes where goats and pigs were distributed and their offspring handed over to other community members.
As part of the programme, farmers are trained in grafting mango trees. In this way better varieties with higher yields can be produced. © Caritas Vorarlberg
