In the remote district of Ulanga, newborns and young mothers are exposed to a variety of health risks during pregnancy and birth. In the villages, SolidarMed worked with the village committees and community health workers to compile knowledge on pregnancy and newborn care. Girls and young women were informed about risks of early pregnancies, family planning methods and sexually transmitted diseases. They learnt to protect themselves and their unborn child from HIV and malaria. SolidarMed developed its interventions with local partner hospitals and health authorities. It renovated hospitals and health centres, and it assisted the personnel in matters of management. By training doctors, nurses and midwives and by providing essential equipment to village health posts, SolidarMed considerably improved the conditions in which women give birth. Improve Health of Women, Newborns and Teenage Mothers To detect malnutrition early, monitoring of the nutritional status is important.
